Gouvion-Saint-Cyr, Laurent, marquis de

(1764-1830)
military and political figure, marshal of France
Born in Toul, Laurent, marquis de Gouvion-Saint-Cyr, after studying design and painting in Rome and Paris, joined the revolutionary army as a volunteer (1792). Ambassador to Spain under the Consulate (1802), he took part in the campaigns of the first empire in Prussia (1806-07), Spain, Russia (victory of Polotsk over Wittgenstein, which earned him the field marshal's baton). Sent to defend Dresden (1813), he was forced to surrender, because of lack of supplies. Named minister of war by King louis XV III (1815-17), he put through a law reorganizing the army (Gouvion-Saint-Cyr Law, March 10, 1818), which regulated conscription and promotion (seniority was recognized, and members of the nobility could no longer directly enter the officer corps). Made a peer in 1815, Gouvion-Saint-Cyr resigned his position because of opposition from the ultras, extremely conservative monarchists (1819). He is the author of Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire militaire sous le Directoire, le Consulat et l'Empire (1831).
